Saeima Defence Committee on Tuesday, April 17, passed on to third reading amendments to the Law on Detective Activity. The amendments provide that officials and employees of law enforcement bodies will be no more allowed to obtain detective activity certificates.

The aim of these amendments is to improve equal competitiveness in detective activity. The amendments provide that detective activity certificates will be issued only to those European Union or European Economic Area citizens, as well as Latvian non-citizens who are not officials or employees at law enforcement bodies. Similarly, the amendments state that licence for detective services will be issued only to such individual companies managers of which are not officials or employees of law enforcement bodies.

The amendments were developed considering the fact that those detectives and detective service providers who are not officials or employees of law enforcement bodies find themselves in unequal competitiveness conditions. The reason for this is that officials and employees of law enforcement bodies have access to various data bases and huge information amount what they can use in their detective activities.

The amendments to the said law will be decided upon by Saeima in the third, final, reading, the Saeima Communication department informed.
