The government has demonstrated so many inconsistencies in laws related to the next year’s budget that Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis’ government should either step down or collapse, Riga Stradins University’s Department of Political Science head Ilga Kreituse and University of Latvia Social Sciences Faculty Dean Juris Rozenvalds in an interview to Rīta panorama.
Kreituse believes that even though the next year’s budget counts as approved, it is not in practice. Basically Kucinskis’ government should have collapsed.
Rozenvalds added that there should be two more ministers on the list of officials the opposition has requested to dismiss – Economy Ministry Arvils Aseradens, whose ministry failed to prepare changes to micro-enterprise regulations, and Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis, who failed to secure professional work of the government.
Rozenvalds said Latvia should not expect any changes, because there are no other alternatives for the government’s formation. He added that Latvia has had catastrophically low political competition for the longest time.
It should be added that the opposition has collected ten signatures of Saeima deputies to request the dismissal of Finance Minister Dana Reizniece-Ozola and Welfare Minister Janis Reirs. Deputies from LRA and Harmony, as well as independent parliamentarian Artuss Kaimins have signed the dismissal request.
«Finally, someone has to take responsibility for the chaos in taxes, the failure to come through with pre-election promises, reduction of overall competitiveness of Latvian businessmen and the destabilization of the work of small businessmen,» – said head of Saeima faction of LRA Martins Bondars.
Representatives of the ruling coalition will not support the initiative to dismiss Reizniece-Ozola and Reirs. The Union of Greens and Farmers intends to vote against the dismissal request, Saeima deputy Edgars Putra told LETA. He explained that the opposition has always had such a tool for attracting attention. LRA has decided to use the moment to express distrust to government representatives, said the deputy.
According to Solvita Aboltina, there is a collective irresponsibility situation noticed in the government. Because of that, she expressed her apology from the Saeima tribune. Aboltina apologized for the need to look for solutions and for the government’s inability to find them during the budget’s development. «I also apologize that Unity was so powerless, cowardly and compromise-seeking that we failed to recognize the need to do something about the micro-enterprise tax two years ago,’ – Aboltina said at a Saeima meeting on Thursday.
At the same time, she emphasized that Unity has submitted its proposals for legal drafts. Unity would not support he request to dismiss the prime minister.
The National Alliance does not plan to support this request as well. The party’s co-chairman Gaidis Berzins emphasized that the decision for minimal social fees should have been made one year ago. Economy Ministry should have submitted its own proposal for a regulation for lifestyle companies. Berzins also said it is possible the situation that surfaced as a result of tax changes may be reviewed later.
