Protest demonstrations in 80 Spanish cities
(No Ratings Yet)Over 1.5 million people took part in the anti-government demonstrations in Spain. These protest acts took place in 80 Spanish cities on July 19. Country residents were opposing tax increase, reduction of unemployment benefits and the cancellation of bonuses for civil servants.
Manifestations were organized by the largest labour unions of the country, the General workers’ union, officials associations, police officers, judges, soldiers, firefighters and students, ITAR-TASS writes.
Labour union representatives warned that this is «only a preamble to the wave of protests» that they are planning to organize, if «the government will not change its policy.» They demanded the Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to carry out referendums and ask the Spaniards themselves whether they agree to the new measures, aimed to the reduction of budget deficit.
Generally, demonstrations progressed peacefully, and only one person was detained in Madrid. He is accused of violating public peace and assaulting an officer.
