Dzintars Zakis

The rating of the Unity party, which will soon be celebrating its jubilee, has been unstable. This political force is considered as the most popular, and as the one that has been rapidly losing support. A reasonable person would ask himself: is the rating’s instability related to the case of the leader of Unity – Dzintars Zakis – and specifically the case with his car and the unpaid VAT for it, the memory of which was livened by the accusation of basketball player Andris Biedrins in tax avoidance when purchasing a motorboat?

According to the survey of Latvian facts, Unity’s rating increased in June and 18.5% of citizens would like to see the party in the Saeima. On the other hand, the survey published by SKDS a few weeks later, showed that Unity’s rating declined from 17.2% to 14.4%.

Latvian facts Director, sociologist Aigars Freimanis reservedly commented the question from Latvian Radio on whether Dzintars Zakis’ purchase of his car through his firm and the related «problem of morally ethical nature», according to the politician himself, became the stumbling rock for the entire party.

The sociologist admits that Unity’s reaction on the Zakis case was insecure, and he explains this with the party’s desire to protect one of its leaders. If Zakis wants to remain in politics for a long time, it would be best for him to resign from the post of the faction’s leader and stay in the shadow for some time, the sociologist believes.

It should be noted that four years ago, when Unity’s predecessor-party New Time (Jaunais laiks) was in the opposition, the faction very sharply opposed the Minister for Electronic Government Affairs from the Greens’ and Farmers’ Union Ina Gudele.

At the time, the light was shed on the fact that the minister’s birthday celebration in summer 2007 was registered as a seminar on the development of e-services. After paying back the State Treasury around 800 LVL for the expenses for the celebration, Gudele resigned, left the Farmers’ union, and left politics.

At least now, Zakis should be the one to resign from his post, says former minister Gudele.

There have been mistakes and good deeds for Unity; this is why the party simply needs to continue its work, but its rating remains steadily around 14% – there was an unexplainable and rapid increase before the last drop. Meanwhile, the situation surrounding Unity and the influence of Zakis’ car purchase is being assessed by the Chairwoman of the Saeima Solvita Aboltina.
