Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUOn Thursday, 17 August, Vilnius airport’s runway was festively opened. This was the most massive reconstruction for the airport in the past 20 years. It was a unique project for Lithuania and all of Europe, airport representatives say.

After a 35-day break, the airport’s function has been restored. Most flights will soon return to Vilnius from Kaunas, where they were being diverted while reconstruction was being performed.

«Full reconstruction of the runway has been performed. Asphalt cover has been completely restored and all infrastructure associated with the runway has been updated. The new lighting system will ensure safer landing for aircraft and higher competitiveness for Vilnius International Airport in the region,» comments A.C.B chairman Valdis Lejnieks.

He continues: «Having a coordinated and professional team for a project of this scale is vital. This is exactly what allowed us to perform all work faster than we had initially planned.»

As noted by Lithuanian Transport and Communication Minister Rokas Masiulis, reconstruction of the airport’s runway will definitely become this year’s largest and successfully completed project now only in Lithuania, but also Europe.

«Runway’s reconstruction was needed and important to the country. We can see the work that was performed within the allotted schedule in spite of not always favourable weather conditions. Kaunas Airport deserves gratitude for assisting its colleagues from other airports. They successfully carried out the task that was entrusted to them – serve as a substitute for Vilnius airport while reconstruction was being performed,» says Masiulis.

At the same time, Vilnius International Airport’s Director Gediminas Almantas says: «I am happy with high professionalism and significant efforts that went into this project’s realization. I am proud of the teams working at Lithuanian airports, construction companies and all partners, because everyone worked together like never before.»

Reconstruction of Vilnius International Airport’s runway cost nearly EUR 19 million and took a total of 35 days.
