Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUEven the vaguely set goal of the President of Latvia Andris Bērziņš on forming a better government has not been completed, says Saeima deputy and representative of Reform Party Juris Viļums, commenting the formation process of the new government.

He and another Reform Party member Valdis Liepiņš both abstained from the Saeima vote for the approval of Laimdota Straujuma’s new government this Wednesday, January 22.

‘From the very beginning I have been supportive of the possibility if allowing the current government to continue to work. I voted for it once in the past. And I wanted to give it my support to continue to work until the next Saeima elections. I do not know what manner of blackmail was used to achieve Valdis Dombrovskis’ resignation, but I could not find it within myself to vote for this government of Laimdota Straujuma’s choosing. I strongly believe Latvia deserves (and is well capable of forming) a much better government – everything that was achieved before this mess is a great example of this!’ – said the Saeima deputy.

‘It is good that the government declaration includes plans for regions, at least formally. However, can any person included in the new government mention a single Latvian region that is meant to be included in the plans stated in this document? Yes, there are special regions in Latvia, but there are also statistical regions, waste management regions, regions that fall under special support programmes and the Riga regions. Even former district territories in Latvia are often called regions (Jekabpils, Cesis and Ludza). We can also add cultural regions of Latvia. Finally, each state institution has its own division based on geographical location. These specifically separated regions rarely comply with official borders. One fine example for this is the Saeima electoral districts,’ – said Viļums.

According to him, the document does not say a word about Latvian language of Latgale’s residents. ‘Will this truly a succession government? In the past two years, we have managed to secure television and radio programmes in Latgalian. This was done basically with no support from the government. The State Language Centre has restored the Sub-Committee for Latgalian language orthography. There will soon be a fully interactive ABC for Latgalian language. The state budget of 2014 includes plans for financial support for measures planned for the resolution of the Global Latgalian Congress for the introduction of Latgalian language in Latvia’s education system. I still cannot understand why official chose not to carry over a specific section of the old declaration to the new: “To improve preservation and development of regions’ culture and language, strengthen regional identity as part of our residents’ national identity. Support the richness of Latvian language’s accents and develop Latgalian language as an important part of Latvian language’s development.” This government has nothing to offer Latgalians and other carriers of Latvia’s culture,’ – said the deputy.
