Riga City Architect’s Office invites residents to become involved in the evaluation of projects nominated for the 2016 Riga Architecture Annual Award.
A total of 11 projects are competing this year for the award.
«The jury has done significant work in assessing dozens of last year’s commissioned projects. 11 finalists have been chosen in the end. Continuing the tradition of the past three years, we wish to attract the attention of the public to the Riga Architecture Annual Award and have them voice their opinion. Public opinion is an important part of the city’s development process,» – emphasizes Riga city’s architect Gvido Princis.
Members of the college of Riga City Architect Office, industry experts and members of Riga City Council are also invited to assess the nominees. The winner will be decided at the end of September.
Evaluation of finalists was being held throughout all of summer, as the team of experts meticulously visited and assessed the state of the buildings. The team of experts searched for the best examples of preservation of architectural values in regards to longevity of the city’s residential environment. Experts paid attention to energy efficiency, environmental accessibility and compliance with universal design principles.
In accordance with tradition, Riga Architecture Annual Award is presented on the first Monday of October – the World Architecture Day. It will be celebrated on 3 October this year. It is planned that the award ceremony will be held in Latvia’s National Library. Last year’s award ‘For vision and ambition to challenge established traditions in Riga’s architecture’ was presented to architect Gunars Birkerts in cooperation with architects Modris Gelze, Maris Mezulis, Sandra Laganovska and Dainis Smits.
