On World Architecture Day, 5 October, the Riga’s Architecture of the Year Award was presented to the National Library of Latvia and its authors – architect Gunars Birkerts, Modris Gelzis, Marcis Mezulis, Sandra Laganovska, Dainis Smits and others.
«This year’s award in architecture is presented to a building of national importance. This building will provide benefits to not only modern but also future generations in Latvia. The importance of it is paramount. It falls on us to ensure we use it accordingly. Without a doubt, the new building of the National Library of Latvia will bring new light to your country’s capital and landscape beauty. It defines new standards and criteria for architecture and construction field. It also provides new challenges for future generations of architects and builders,» – says Riga City Architect Gvido Princis.
In addition to the award, Riga City Architecture Bureau also gave the architects ten certificates for exceptional achievements in architecture.
In previous years, the main prize had been awarded to buildings like Tērbatas ielas brāļi, two office and stores on the corner of Terbatas Street and Lāčplēša Street, (By Kubs architects bureau, 2006), VEF 1 and 1a wing reconstruction (by architect J.Poga bureau, 2007), Ostas skatu building in Kipsala (by Arhitektonika bureau, 2008).
