Ronis participates in the International Transport forum in Leipzig
(No Ratings Yet)Minister of Transport Aivis Ronis will take part in the annual International Transport forum May 2-3, as well as in the ministry session, which will take place on the same dates in the German city of Leipzig.

As part of the forum our Minister of Transport has a meeting with the Vice President of the European Commission and Transport Commissar Siim Kallas. During this meeting both sides plan to discuss the current development directions of the Rail Baltic project. Ronis reports that Latvia is prepared to announce procurement for the projects further development, and plan to close the deal in September. As part of further research into this project, it is planned to survey the possibility of connecting the RB railway with the Riga International airport and the Riga Free port, because keeping in mind the latest EU transport plan documents, the airport is part of the TEN-T network, so the airport will require a railway connection, Ministry of Transport reports.
Also, Ronis has a two sided meeting scheduled with the Turkish Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Minister Binali Yildirim, as well as the first deputy of the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Constantine Yefimenko, with whom our minister will discuss their cooperation in the ZUBR container train project. The ZUBR project member countries (Latvia, Estonia, Belarus and Ukraine) are interested in developing it, because it offers an effective and economically beneficial way of transport between the Baltic and Black Sea regions.
As part of the forum, Ronis and his colleagues, as well as transport representatives from other countries will discuss air, sea, road and railway connectivity issues. During the debates, the ministers will discuss what governments need to do to ensure undisturbed, transport flow of goods without significant barriers.
During the International Transport forum, Transport Ministers from all over the world will also elects a new Transport forum General Secretary.
The International Transport forum is an intergovernmental organization consisting of 53 countries.
