In order to avoid physical overload, infarction of insultus during a marathon, cycling or other high-load competition, the Latvian Society of Cardiology suggests drinking a lot of water, follow pulse, check health status and not to overestimate one’s power. It especially refers to physically less trained people who are not accustomed to a longer physical load in a hot weather.

To avoid heart problems, cardiologists say people should:

• During a day of a marathon or other big competition drink from 4 up to 6 litres of water. On normal days it should be at least 2 litres.

• Follow the pulse and not over-speed, no matter how much you wish to finish with a better result! Pulse rate should normally be 60 beats a minute, but during a long load on average from 120 to 140 beats a minute, depending on age and health state.

• Before a marathon or other serious competition go through the basic heart health control. Check your blood pressure! It is the first and the simplest, but one of the most important examinations. Blood pressure should at any age normally be 120/80 mmHg. If you have hypertension over 140/90 mmHg, you should consult your doctor before going to the start.

Before the marathon and on the day of the marathon you must not:

• Drink alcoholic beverages.

• Use psychotropic substances, energy drinks and similar.

• Smoke.

• Overeat .
