Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUThere are certain signs that Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis may make his decision in regards to the next prime minister in favour of Unity, says deputy chairman of Unity’s Saeima faction Karlis Sadurskis.

«Whether it is Solvita Aboltina or some other member of Unity – we will respect the president’s choice,» – said Sadurskis in a telephone conversation with Rīta panorama programme of LTV.

When asked if there is any chance it could be Finance Minister Janis Reirs or Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis, the politician said: «I won’t pretend to be smarter than the president. If the ball is in his part of the field, we will let him be the first to kick it».

When asked if Aboltina is not a mere decoy of a candidate, Sadurskis replied: «I will say this: it was never out intention to put such a thought across. Yes, the party’s leader and secretary general mentioned the outcome of the vote of Unity members. But that is all. The choice is in the hands of the president now,» – reminded Sadurskis.

He also mentioned that the next prime minister should be someone capable of acquiring support from more than 50 Saeima deputies. Initially, when Unity had only one potential candidate and Union of Greens and Farmers had two, it was clear that no one would get the desired majority of votes, and so this process came to a halt, said Sadurskis.

«We now wait for the president to make his move,» – he added.

Explaining the government formation process, Sadurskis noted that no government is formed «at the flick of a magic wand». On top of that, this process was delayed by the Christmas holiday.

As previously confirmed by Solvita Aboltina, President Raimonds Vejonis has mentioned multiple potential PM candidates and has held informal talks with them.

Aboltina did not mention any names and numbers. «I don’t want to mention any names because I would rather avoid any possible red lines and red flags that may pop up in regards to any candidate, including me,» – she said.

No potential PM candidates were discussed or proposed at the Monday’s meeting, said Aboltina. No discussions were held in regards to readiness of any politicians to take up the reins over the government.

When asked if Finance Minister Janis Reirs is a good example, Aboltina said it would be best to wait for the president’s official nomination before speculating. At the same time, she said many members of Unity would be a good choice.
