The first ten years of the new millennium were full of all kinds of events – the 9/11 terrorist strike in USA and events that followed that tragedy; the impact left by the Lord of The Rings trilogy and the now cult classic books about Harry Potter.
National Geographic has compiled a list of five most significant events that have changed our world:
Terror acts in USA
By far the most tragic event in the beginning of the new millennium was the 9/11 terror act in USA, which was carried out by Al-Qaeda terrorist organization. Information states 3,000 people were killed and damage worth USD 10 billion was done to the country.
Saddam Hussein’s overthrowing from the post of President of Iraq
Another noteworthy event was the overthrowing of Saddam Hussein from the post of President of Iraq. He was captured by American forces on 13 December 2015 and sentenced to death 5 November 2006 for committing crimes against humanity. The execution was carried out on 30 December. During Hussein’s presidency Iraq was an authoritarian state that oppressed forces it believed to be a threat, especially efforts of ethnic and religious groups to gain independence.
Barack Obama becomes the first dark-skinned President of the United States of America
Something previously unheard of happened in USA: an Afro-American became President. Barack Obama – the 41st and current President of USA – was first elected in November 2008. In 2009, Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation among people.
Lehman Brothers bankruptcy and the global economic crisis
The main event that resulted is a serious shock to the global financial system was the bankruptcy of the American bank giant Lehman Brothers (founded in 1850) in 2008. The bankruptcy of this mega-giant resulted in the global economic crisis, which significantly impacted all countries of the world.
Google victory march
Google (founded in 1998) began its rapid victory march after significantly affecting the global online culture. Google search engine became the most popular one in the world. Over the past ten years, Google has acquired multiple enterprises, including YouTube.

People no longer believe in their own country, because they associate it with people who make decisions
The biggest threat to Latvia is the fact that society, including state officials, is afraid. It limits people’s internal freedom.
