Study: 61% of people continue working while on vacation

Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUAn international performed by marketwatch.com on vacation trends among working people shows that only 25% of all employed people use their vacation to the full extent. 61% of all employed people continue working while on vacation and remain reachable on the phone or electronically. 17% of respondents said they fear being fired if they take a vacation.

The study also reveals that only 51% of Americans use their vacation rights and 72% of Chinese have not used their vacations in more than three years.

«I think Latvia’s indexes may even be more dramatic than that. The modern digital age makes us easily reachable 24/7. Still, this does not mean we should keep our hands on the pulse at all times,» comments business management, leadership teacher and trainer Kintija Barloti.

The Labour Law states that every employed person has the right for an annual paid vacation. Such a vacation is not allowed to be shorter than four calendar weeks. It is allowed to be provided in parts no smaller than two consecutive calendar weeks.

The study shows that the majority of people most often decide to divide their vacation – pick several days a week or just a couple from time to time. This approach does not help them rest, unfortunately, as it is too short.

Barloti also comments: «If an employee does not want to go on vacation and works overtime every day (I do not mean exceptional cases and unforeseen situations), this means poor time management. It is important to teach or force yourself to organize work properly. It is a serious and very important step for the development of a healthy and successful career.»

She also notes that regular overtime does not always mean a hard-working employee. More often than not it points to a general lack of organizational skills or chaotic personality. To become a productive worker and successful manager to employees, it is necessary to perform everyday time and work planning.

Reasons for why employees do not want to go on vacation can be different – some are worried that leaving work would mean the end for a project and others lack confidence about the skills of others, according to study results.

Barloti says there are people who feel well working every day, and vacation creates a sense of stress for them. This is because people are often unable to adapt to change and having to tackle household problems. Others feel lonely on weekends and on vacation. There are also people who feel fulfilled only while working, saying that spending time without a clear goal is a pointless waste of time.

Leadership trainer also says there is an overtime work cult, which leads to exhaustion of the labour resource and reduction of productivity. «We are confident – the more we work and the more stress we expose ourselves to, the greater the business success we will achieve. This is completely wrong. Overtime and stress impedes a person’s ability to focus and set priorities,» Barloti explains.
