Total value of cars stolen in 2011 - 8.5 million euro

Last year 1 000 cars were stolen in Latvia, which brings the total value of the thefts to 8 485 017 euro (5.9 million LVL).
About 21 cars for a total value of 163 170 euro (126.6 thousand LVL) are stolen weekly. The average price of a car thieves favour the most hits 7944 euro (5 583 LVL), according to SIA Autonams representative Georgs Rubenis.
Last year, a total of 1068 cars were stolen. Compared with 2010, it is about 20% less (1307). Whereas, if comparing with 2009 and 2008 – the figure is down significantly.
The numbers of thefts are also influenced by the total number of cars in Latvia. Compared with 2008, it was down 376 188 or 35.31% in 2011.
Previous years show that at the beginning of the crisis the number of car thefts dropped. However, it is likely that in 2012 this type of activity will increase.
This will be enhanced by several factors: an increase in GDP and wages as well as growing population’s wealth. Besides, along with improvements in the country’s economic indicators, it is expected that a small part of Latvian emigrants might return. It means that also people inclined to criminal offense could come back to Latvia.
It is also planned that as a result of economic growth, in 2012 the total number of cars could increase by 50 000 to 55 000.
Last year, a decrease in new car thefts was recorded. Mostly thieves preferred Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Toyota and Honda. Their most favourite car models in 2011 were VW Golf, Audi, VW PassatVariant, Audi A6 Avant, VW Caravelle, Toyota Landcruiser, Toyota Avensis, VW Passat, Audi A6 and VW Multivan.
