Ukraine’s sex industry «employees» anxiously await Euro 2012, which is due to begin on June 8. This international event means the influx of wealthy foreign clients and a significant increase to their income, despite the fact the AIDS runs rampant in the country, French Le Monde magazine writes.

This kind of anxiety is normal for any event with a large number of male audience aggregates in one place. The exact same thing happened during the World Cup 2010 in South Africa – prostitutes from all over the world showed up there.

Some Ukrainian intimate service provider stated on his website that Kiev girls are actively preparing for the championship. Some prostitutes are studying the history of the countries competing in the championship, others – football terminology with an intention to attract the largest possible number of clients, Newsru.com reports.

Despite the illegal status of prostitution, it is estimated that there are from 52 to 83 thousand representatives of the «oldest profession» in Ukraine. Most of them plan to raise their «service» prices two or even three times during the championship. Corrupt police officers will also raise their bribe prices for their cover of public establishments, says Legalife manager Jelena Cukerman, who works to protect the rights of this kind of women.

All this presents a great risk, because, compared to other European countries, there is a large spread of AIDS in Ukraine. Official data states that the spread of HIV infection in Ukraine reaches 1.1% of the total population. The infection carriers are most often prostitutes that do not use condoms regularly. 60% of all prostitutes are categorically against having sex without condoms, the rest are willing to do it without condoms, especially when clients are offering to pay extra.
