The first kit for HIV testing at home received green light from the US regulatory institutions and will be available for purchase in the nearest months.

The OraQuick express test analyses saliva samples and produces a result within 20-40 minutes.

According to the US government up to 20% of 1.2 million HIV infected citizens of their country do not know that they are infected.

The US Food and Drug Administration allowed the production and distribution of the OraQuick kit without a doctor’s prescription and hopes that this will allow diagnosing HIV in those people, who would not want to be openly tested for HIV.

This special kit will be sold in 30 000 different trading spots – pharmacies, household product stores and on the internet, BBC reports.

The manufacturer company, OraSure, did not announce a retail price, but confirmed that the express-test will cost less than 60 dollars.

Organizations specializing in distributing HIV/AIDS related information welcomed the approval of this express-test.

Nevertheless, results of this express-test cannot be considered 100% accurate and their confirmation requires professional analysis.

OraSure reports that their product’s testing was 92% accurate on people that already have HIV. Negative results – i.e. that the person is not infected with HIV – were presented 99% of all test cases.

During the last 20 years, there have been 50 000 new cases of HIV infection registration in USA.
