US warship sailors to take part in charity events in Latvia

On Saturday, August 4, the USS Farragut of the United States of America will arrive in Riga. The goal of this visit is the continuation of the cooperation of US 6th fleet with Baltic countries in terms of marine cooperation and marine security.
The visit of USS Farragut in Riga is part of the 6th fleet’s cruising schedule, the US embassy reports.
On Sunday, August 5, sailors of the warship will take part in the clean-up events organized by Pēdas LV association. After the event, at 14:00, sailors will take part in a friendly basketball game with the Latvian National Armed Forces basketball team (Krustabaznīcas Street 9).
On Monday, August 6, the USS Farragut sailors will visit the Stella Maris social care centre (Birzes Street 54) to meet with the centre’s residents and carry out wall and fence painting works. «August 6 will be like a holiday for the centre. News of the coming of American sailors caused an increased interest in this event. These visits turn a different view on the world and make days much more colourful,»- says the Director of the centre Aldis Virbulis.
The USS Farragut will arrive with a friendly mission accompanied by an additional escort ship. This is the second time American sailors participate in charity events in Riga. In 2011, they helped clean up the premises of Ziemeļi orphanage.
It is a tradition for American sailors to participate in charity events whenever they are stationed in some country.
