The next year promises to be rich with interesting astronomical observations, including two Sun eclipses and two lunar eclipses, an interesting sight involving Venus and Jupiter, as well as nights with the Moon shining as brightly as stars, as reported by Latvian Astronomical Society and StarSpace.
The most significant event of 2017 will be the full Sun eclipse on 21 August 2017. To see it, it will be necessary to travel to USA, the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean or Atlantic Ocean. It will be possible to observe both lunar eclipses from Latvia – the penumbral lunar eclipse on 11 February and partial lunar eclipse on 7 August. Another eclipse – annular solar eclipse – will be observed on 26 February 2017 from Chile, Argentina, Angola, Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo.
A penumbral eclipse will be observed in Latvia at night (00:34 – 04:53) on 11 February. It will be hard to observe at its maximum phase (02:44) and the brightness of the Moon will be slightly lower than the brightness usually observed for a full moon.
All of the Solar System’s brightest planets will be visible in 2017. Mercury will be visible in evenings at the end of March and the beginning of April. Around the second half of January and the middle of September, the planet will be visible in morning hours. Venus will become visible in the evenings starting from the beginning of the year until 20 March. From July to the middle of November, it will be visible in morning hours. Mars will be visible in the sky in evening hours throughout January to the middle of March. From the middle for September and all the way until the end of 2017, Mars will be visible in morning hours. Jupiter will be visible at night in January, February, March and May.
Next year, it will be possible to observe how the Moon obscures and reveals Taurus constellation’s brightest star – Aldebaran. The star will be obscured on 6 November and revealed again on 31 December. On 8 December, shortly after dusk the Moon will obscure Leo constellation’s brightest start – Regulus.
