45% of Latvians believe workaholics inevitably «burn out»

Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUMost interviewed Latvian residents have a negative outlook on workaholism, and 45% consider it the main cause for an early «burn-out» at work, according to a survey from CV-Market.

45% of respondents in the survey ‘What is your opinion on workaholism?’ said it is a bad habit that inevitably leads to and early burn-out. 20% of respondents explain this phenomenon with people’s inability to effectively plan their time.

22% of respondents are positive towards hard-working, saying that it demonstrates a person’s desire to achieve a good quality of work. Meanwhile 13% of respondents said that workaholism is a good quality to have for a career person.

«Workaholism is a common quality among people, but it does not provide any considerable benefits in the long run,» CV-Market personnel selection manager Kristaps Kolosovs comments on results. «Although initially an employee with a tendency towards workaholism may accomplish a lot and become valuable for their employer, over time this kind of approach will cost the person their personal life. Sooner or later it will start affecting their career.»

Kolosovs explains that early enthusiasm to prove something often becomes workaholism. This inevitably leads to burn-out. To avoid this outcome, people should learn to plan their time in a way to allocate enough for work, family and other activities. This is also why employers should learn to give their employees appropriate tasks – to make sure employees do not overwork. «Both sides should keep in mind that rest and out-of-work interests provide a fresh look at things and help assist with efficiency in business activities,» says Kolosovs.

Survey data reveals that workaholism is considered a bad habit by men and women alike. Meanwhile, the belief that this characteristic signifies a person’s inability to plan their time was mentioned more often by women, especially in the age group older than 35. Men of the same age also often mentioned this. Nevertheless, the majority of respondents who consider workaholism a useful trait to have are men.

Workaholism as a negative trait was mentioned by respondents employed in sales, retail trade and IT sectors. Employees of tourism, hotel business, transport and logistics sector, on the other hand, said workaholism is a positive trait to have.

Career portal themuse.com explains that reasons behind workaholism are divided into three categories – the fear of losing one’s job, the desire to get paid more, and passion for one’s work. According to specialists, the first step towards combating workaholism is coming home from work early and finding more time for leisure.

«Looking back at results in a week or two, it is important to check is status and respect is not lost by then. If the reason behind workaholism is financial, experts recommend asking management to re-arrange work hours and wages. If work is a passion for a person, it is necessary to remember that even enthusiastic people need to rest every now and then,» survey representatives say.
