Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUTo increase railway cargo carrying efficiency and ensure economically competitive services to clients, Baltic Express has commenced wagon delivery technological operations in Ventspils railway hub.

It should be mentioned that the first 57 wagons carrying coal were delivered by Baltic Express to Ventspils 1 Station as far as Ventspils Commercial Port’s owned railway access roads.

Baltic Express delivered cargo wagons from Daugavpils to Ventspils. Until now such deliveries were allowed using a mediator’s assistance – LDz Cargo.

Baltic Express chairman Māris Bremze comments: «This is an important development for Baltic Express workers and customers. After a long period of preparation we have managed to secure full service for our clients – cargo recipients. I am convinced the ability of private cargo carriers to independently and freely organize deliveries is an important and decisive factor for future improvement of railway cargo transports and reduction of the continued cargo decline in Latvia.»

The company’s representatives say State Railway Administration’s involvement was needed, and it took more than six months for Baltic Express to reach an agreement with LDz and its subsidiary LDz Cargo on delivery of cargoes all the way to the terminal’s territory.

Bremze says: «I think the time has come to reassess the situation in the country’s railway situation, because in spite of attempts to open the railway system for competition, including the reorganization performed by LDz ten years ago, private carriers remain unable to access railway infrastructure and be economically independent with provision of services. Although LDz, as the manager of railway infrastructure, is not allowed to influence and be involved in railway transports business, the ties between LDz and LDz Cargo are so tight, I believe LDz functions as a cargo carrier.»
