Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RULatvian Professional Cleaning and Management Association is concerned about the recently surfaced information that the cleaning of the façade of the new building of Latvian National Library would cost EUR 80,000.

Any professional cleaning company could do the work ten times cheaper with a proper plan, says LPUAA CEO Jānis Ozoliņš.

The market price for cleaning services of building facades is EUR 0.50-EUR 1.00 per 1 m2. Because the area of the façade of the Castle of Light, according to available information, is 15,300 m2, its cleaning costs should range within EUR 7,650 – EUR 15,300. «If expenses are higher than that, then one has to question the effectiveness and rationality behind the author’s solution,» – he said.

Considering that tests are being held on the effect of cleaning substances under current weather conditions, it is not possible to announce the exact term when the cleaning of the façade will end. Nevertheless, an organization representing LPUAA notes that there should be special cleaning instructions for materials used in construction, as there should have been effective cleaning solutions developed during the project’s creation.

The cleaning of the building’s façade should be carried out in either spring or autumn, not winter, adds LPUAA’s representative. Considering the intensity of traffic near the building and its national importance, the façade of the Castle of Light should be cleaned two times a year.

LPUAA is prepared to consult the management of the Castle of Light on matters of proper and effective cleaning in order to avoid such situations in the future. Properly planned work can significantly reduce costs, says Ozoliņš.

Describing the problem’s core, Ozoliņš admits that the country should have one or several management bodies for national properties in order to provide quality and economically effective maintenance.

It was previously mentioned that the possible cleaning costs of the façade of the Castle of Light may reach EUR 80,000 (no VAT). It was added that this amount would depend on the amount of dust and smog around the building, which would require the use of special cleaning substances.

Ilga Sokolova, representative of National Union of Construction Companies, says the façade has been cleaned once before: prior to the completion of construction and subsequent handing over of the building to the client, the façade was prepared and cleaned. A contract was signed later on to provide cleaning for next time.
