The most notable Northern tourism exhibition Matka 2012 has begun in Helsinki, Finland. Latvia will be participating with its own stand on January 17-20.

More than 1100 representatives from 70 countries are participating this year. One of the features of the Helsinki exhibition is that Latvian representatives traditionally begin the season by attracting many travellers. In 2011, nearly 80 thousand visitors came to the exhibition in Helsinki, reports the State Tourism Development Agency.

Visitors of the Latvian stand will be able to receive tourism maps of Riga and Latvia and booklets written in Finnish, as well as other useful information on notable tourism destinations and healthcare for tourists.

A special innovation is a map prepared for Finnish car tourists. It was created as a gift for Matka 2013 and the international car tourism exhibition Caravan 2013. Both exhibitions take place in Helsinki at the same time. This year is also notable because Latvia has become a partner country of the Caravan exhibition.

In preparation to the Caravan exhibition, Latvia was examined by a popular Finnish Journalist. Visitors of the exhibition will be able to read a special edition of the Caravan Lehti magazine, in which Anti Ville Hentonen describes Latvia from the perspective of a car tourist. This magazine is very popular among Finnish tourists, the number of readers exceeds 150 thousand.

Another innovative approach of this year’s exhibition is a video game – Watch and Win. Which will be available on the internet throughout spring. The winner will receive an all-inclusive trip to Latvia for several days for him and three friends.

Latvia’s national stand will feature 15 participants approved by the European Regional Development Fund: Riga Tourism Development Bureau, Jurmala City Council, “Ogres un Ikšķiles tūrisma attīstības aģentūra” municipal agency, Latvian Hotel and Tourism Association, VSIA Latvian Concerts, Sigulda Regional Council, Livanu Regional Council, Kurzeme Tourism Association, Smile Line, Hotel Jurmala SPA, Travel In, Nikos Travel, BBH Investments, Panbaltica Latvia, and a joint Latvian-German enterprise REHO.

It should be added that Matka 2013 was the exhibition to which the Latvian tourism industry first applied with its motto “Latvia. Best Enjoyed Slowly” in 2011.
