Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUFour potential core parties of the new government promise to offer Latvian President Raimonds Vējonis a prime minister candidate supported by all of them by 4 January next year.

This was agreed upon by representatives of New Unity, New Conservative Party, Attīstībai/Par! and National Alliance ‘All for Latvia’-‘For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK’ on Friday, 28 December.

Parties have decided they are ready to submit the new government to the Saeima for approval as soon as possible, says New Unity politician Arvils Ašeradens.

These parties would support KPV LV inclusion in the government. They intent to wait for KPV LV party’s response until 3 January, said the politician. It is planned to continue government formation talks on 3 January.

NCP leader Jānis Bordāns said an agreement has been reached that affirms all four parties’ government approach. NA politician and Saeima speaker Ināra Mūrniece and AP co-chairman Juris Pūce say that political parties will wait for a response from KPV LV on joining the government. At the same time, the four parties are ready to turn to the Saeima without KPV LV if the party decides against joining the government.

When asked if there are any plans to include the Union of Greens and Farmers in the government, Bordāns said this topic has not been brought up so far.

Ašeradens says Krišjānis Kariņš is his party’s prime minister candidate. He adds that Kariņš is prepared to lead a government if there are five parties, which would be the most optimal scenario. When asked about the prime minister candidate in a situation when the government might have only four party support, Ašeradens said it would be a new situation and that it would be necessary to wait for Kariņš’s response on leading a four-party Cabinet of Ministers.

When asked if he would agree becoming prime minister candidate, Ašeradens said Kariņš is New Unity’s candidate, adding that he «is not on the list».
