Latvia's number of unemployed individuals drops below 100 000

Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RULatvia’s level of unemployment was 9.9% at the end of May. Compared with that of April 2013, unemployment has dropped 0.5% in Latvia.

In the beginning of May, there were 102 760 unemployed individuals on record at the State Employment Agency (SEA). By the end of May their number had reduced to 97 769. For the first time since the increase of unemployment due to the economic crisis, the number of registered unemployed individuals has dropped below 100 000.

7 564 individuals were granted the status of the unemployed this May. This is 10.2% less than there was in April 2013. 6 805 unemployed individuals found jobs and informed SEA about this. The status of 4 761 unemployed individuals was revoked because they did not fulfil their duties as unemployed individuals.

A total of 3 798 vacancies were added to SEA’s job register. 6 130 jobs were registered in SEA’s database at the end of May. Employers sought the following workers the most this May: shop assistants, seamstress, handymen, truck drivers, cooks, postmen, pickers, ship repairmen, ship engineers, locksmith, sales consultants, seasonal agricultural workers.

Riga’s region had the lowest level of unemployment this May – 6.5%. The highest unemployment level was registered in Latgale – 20.2%. Kurzeme region’s unemployment level was 10.5%. The same goes for Zemgale region – 10.5%. Vidzeme region’s unemployment level was 11.7%.

Unemployment levels in Latvia’s largest cities were as follows: Riga – 6.1%, Jelgava – 7.3%, Valmiera – 6.7%, Ventspils – 7.9%, Liepaja – 9.5%, Jurmala – 8.9%, Daugavpils – 10.1%, Jekabpils – 12.8%, Rezekne – 18.8%.
