Lithuania willing to call Georgia «Sakartvelo»

Senior Lithuanian politicians have expressed readiness to standartise the name it uses referring to Georgia to «Sakartvelo», rather than the Russified name it now uses, «Gruziya», responding to a long-time diplomatic endeavour of the Caucasus state.
News portals Eurasia Net and BaltNews reported that the head of the Lithuanian Parliament Seimas, Viktoras Pranckietis, stated this week that Lithuania’s official name for the Caucasus republic will be changed by 2018 as a «great gift” from Vilnius to the Georgian people.
«Georgians do not like the word «Gruziya»,» Pranckietis explained. «They prefer their country to be called «Sakartvelo».»
Similarly to other countries formerly incorporated in the Soviet Union, Lithuanians now refer to the country as «Gruziya», which is a name many Georgians consider to be a relic of the Russian Empire, while Georgians themselves call their country «Sakartvelo,» which means «a place for Kartvelians (a name for Georgians).»
