Milk purchase price has climbed by 5% in September, compared to the previous month, reaching 184.52 lats per tonne.

The price of milk is growing due to increase in dairy processor demand. Lithuania and Estonia witness a similar increase. Currently, farmers, who offer quality milk, can receive such price as in Poland and even Germany. Overall, this year the average milk purchase price is 58% higher than during the corresponding period in 2009, the Chairman of the Latvian Dairy Producers’ Central Union Board Janis Solks (Jānis Šolks) informed the agency LETA.

On the other hand, the volume of milk procurement has slightly declined in September, compared to the previous month. 46 504 tonnes were bought in for the processing, which is 5% less than in August. Compared with the previous year’s September, the volume of the procured milk has increased by 17%.

In September, compared to August, the external market of milk products has grown. Moreover, butter exports accounted for 100 tonnes (an increase of 12%), skimmed milk powder – 564 tonnes (22% climb), whole milk powder – 227 tonnes (38% growth), cream – 402.3 tonnes (by 35%), dry whey cheese – 771.8 tonnes (a rise by 23%).

When commenting on the tendencies, Solks recognized an apparent discrepancy is seen, because milk procurement has dropped by 5%, the domestic market has not significantly changed, while the export has increased on average by 20%. This can be explained with the fact that currently due to favourable price the companies are realizing industrial products stored during the previous months – dry milk powder, whose storage period is a year. Dry milk products are mainly exported to Estonia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Middle and the Far East.

When asked about the milk price forecasts, Solks told the purchase price growth is likely to continue.

Milk market is stable at the moment. The purchase price of milk might slightly rise, which is good news for farmers, but not so good for consumers, because it means small increase in prices of finished products, Solks concluded, noting that the price climb will not be dramatic because milk producer prices at the stores have already reached a certain price ceiling.

The Latvian Dairy Producers’  Central Union was established in 1995. It unites 16 dairy farming enterprises, annually procuring and processing 90% of the milk in Latvia.
