On 30 December there will be the New Year’s marathon. Anyone can participate. The start will be located at Vienības Square at 14:00.

Anyone interested can participate. Two distances are available to choose from: 500 m or 2 km.

No registration in advance is needed to participate. Anyone willing to run can freely come and participate. Those who want to participate in a post-marathon lottery will have to register here (application form available in Latvian and Russian language).

On 31 December, there will be a concert held at Liepaja Baptist Paul Church to bid farewell to the old year. The concert will span 23:00-23:40. Performers include singer Beāte Zviedre, trumpeter Jānis Ivuškāns and many other talented musicians.

Entry is free of charge.

There is another New Year tradition in Liepaja. A special Carnival marathon will be held at the children’s playground on Jurmalas Street at 11:00 on 31 December. The event has no entry fee, but donations are welcome.

Participants are asked to dress according to the theme: a mask or other carnival attributes. Owners of the best costumes will be awarded prizes.

Dobele City Culture Hall invites residents and guests to the city to come to Tirgus Square at 23:00 and bid farewell to 2018 with Gatis Kondrats, who will organize all kinds of fun activities.

At midnight there will be festive fireworks. Shortly after that there will be a festive concert by singer Agnese Rakovska, lead singer of Triānas Parks band.

Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUNew Year’s festivities will be held in the centre of Valmiera at 23:30 on 31 December. Music will be played before midnight. At midnight there will be festive fireworks.

New Year’s night will be a special time in Valmiera, as residents and guests will be able to visit Valmiera Museum’s expansive Exhibition Hall. The exhibition will feature famous works by artist Maija Tabaka brought from Latvia’s National Museum of Art, Daugava Gallery and Jurmala City Museum.

After the festive fireworks display there will be a New Year’s party held at Valmiera Culture Centre with performances from Džentlmeņu špagats band.

Entry to this event is free of charge.


Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RURadio Trio music band will take the stage at the City Garden in Kuldiga at 23:00, 31 December. Five minutes before midnight Kuldiga Country Council chairperson Inga Bērziņa will offer a speech to residents.

A festive and extraordinary fireworks display will be organized at Mārtiņsala. The old brick bridge over Venta River, as well as Pils Street and City Garden will offer a fantastic view of this spectacle.

Riga, 11 November Embankment

Baltic news, News from Latvia, BNN.LV, BNN-NEWS.COM, BNN-NEWS.RUResidents and guests to the capital are invited to celebrate New Year’s at the 11 November Embankment. Festivities there will be taking place from 21:00 31 December to 03:00 1 January.

Shops will open at the embankment at 21:00 sharp. Visitors will be entertained by evening host Valters Krauze. DJ [Ex] da Bass will be in charge of music. At 22:00 guests of the event will be entertained by Fēlikss Ķiģelis and his troupe. At 23:00 the New Year’s disco non-stop party will commence. Festive fireworks display will commence shortly before midnight.

A public ice skating rink will be open at Riga Congress Hall for all to enjoy from 09:00 31 December to 02:00 1 January.

On 31 December and 1 January, public transport services in Riga will be free of charge.

«Extremely cumbersome» election process reason for low Latvian turnout abroad, expert says
