Number of Fidel Castro’s Twitter followers exceeds 100 000

The number of former Cuba’s leader Fidel Castro followers on his micro-blogging site Twitter has gathered over 100 000 people. On his Twitter blog, Castro reflects about the current political events.

Twitter account transmiting Castro’s views on the global politics has existed for approximately a year. At the moment, 1 760 tweets have been published on the blog followed by more than 101 000 people, reports Agence France – Presse.

Majority of the tweets are devoted to criticism over the United States and NATO. Moreover, Castro compares the ongoing armed conflict in Libya with the Vietnam War.

In Cuba, the Internet is subject to rigorous censorship imposed by the public officials, so Castro’s micro-blog has become a major resource indicating Cuba’s official standpoint. While, Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez has gathered even more Twitter followers – 1.3 million people.

Castro came to power after the revolution in 1959. In 2006, he passed his powers to his brother Raul due to health reasons.
