Survey shows one-third of Baltic residents consider their jobs «normal»

An average of one-third of residents in Baltic States believes their current job fits all requirements to be called normal. Only every fourth resident in Latvia considers their job normal, 40% do not consider their job sufficiently normal, whereas 36% of residents definitely do not consider their job normal.

The opinion which criteria jobs should meet to call it normal differs from country to country. In Latvia working people consider security and stability (51%) and respectable managers (50%) as priorities, whereas working residents in Lithuania prefer a good climate at work (46%) and career growth opportunities (41%). Estonian residents believe the most important sign of a normal work is having friendly colleagues (50%) and flexible work hours (49%).

The survey determined that working people keep track of several important aspects of their jobs. Resident of all three countries value work done by management the lowest (6.6 out of 10), whereas they value the point of their own work the highest (7.5 out to 10).

The majority of working people note that it is necessary to improve teamwork at their place of work, as well as balance between personal life and work. In Latvia 57% of respondents stressed the need to improve working people’s welfare.

Nearly half of respondents would leave their place of work to move to a different job the better meets their requirements for a normal job. 55% of Latvian respondents would do this. 48% of Lithuanian and 47% of Estonian respondents would consider it.

«When asked about the main reasons that could convince them to leave their current job, the majority of employed people mentioned larger wage offered by a different employer or worse working conditions at their current job. In this case it is necessary to look into less obvious nuances why people would consider leaving their job. Still, the feeling of a normal job is important for any person,» human resource management expert Žanna Upeniece comments survey results.

«We can see a need for companies to change the way they look at their employees’ involvement in general work processes. Man companies want employee superheroes that have to overcome one challenge after another. This tendency has caused too many burn-out and work-related stress cases for young and old. It is important to create healthier long-term strategy at work so that people are motivated, satisfied and productive in a long-term perspective,» explains Upeniece.

The survey was initiated in Baltic States by insurance company If to determine what people of working age consider a «normal job». More than 1,500 people from different companies participated in the survey organized by survey company Inspired UM.
